I fancy it just crept up on me. Just one day preceding the next. A small wonder I didn't notice… what I was becoming. And then I looked at you. And I remembered… what it was like to be alive like that. Bill Nighy in Living (2022)

I was gonna edit it to describe all the elements that made me sob audibly at the cinema but I realised I don't even have to edit it

Watching EEAaO sweep was certainly gratifying, but here are my personal Oscar '23 picks in every category! :) [definitely spent too much time on that first slide LOL. worth it.]

This year honestly had one of the best crop of nominees in a while (with the exception of a few glaring snubs). Pretty satisfied with the winners – and their speeches, especially – and while the ceremony was very very tame, it was one to remember! Now on to the 2024 award season...
Side note: Usually, I would try to watch every single nominee, but didn't manage to do so this year (major exams!). I've seen every above-the-line nominee with the exception of Blonde and missed a few below-the-line ones (e.g. Martha Mitchell Effect, Argentina 1985). Doubt watching all of those would make a very big change in my personal winners; this is still pretty accurate!

Living (2022) having the bit where the main character meets this writer, and the writer takes him to "start enjoying life" (the character is terminal with cancer), and you have this montage of their going to bars and a strip club and it's so deeply miserable... because it puts in high contrast how meaningless that all is... chef kiss.

Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: #23: Living (dir. Oliver Hermanus)
Tumblr media
Remaking Kurosawa is not something that should be done haphazardly, remaking Ikiru, of all things, even more so. So, how do you do this without it just being a pale imitation of the original? You get acclaimed novelist/screenwriter Kazuo Ishiguro to helm the script and then cast mega-talent Bill Nighy to play the lead role, that's how. Living is a very quiet film in terms of plot. You get the ins and outs of it pretty quickly and you understand the gist of everything it's going for, which gives Nighy the space to do what he does best, and man, does he do it brilliantly. The film really does hinge on his performance, and it is such an honest, empathetic, and heartbreaking performance that it elevates the film well beyond its boundaries. The sadness in this character doesn't even exist in Nighy's eyes, it exists behind them, almost as if you can see straight past the shell of a person that Nighy's Mr. Williams starts the film out as and see directly into his soul, into all of the regrets of a life not fully lived. It's a film about regret, it's a film about growing, and it's a film about learning that it's never to late to truly start living, and I'm so happy that "The Rowan Tree" isn't just a song that one would hear in everyday life, because just hearing the opening notes of that tune would almost assuredly start the waterworks for me. Currently available to rent/purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.) and on DVD & Blu-ray through Sony Pictures. Read my full review of Living here.

If I had a nickel for every time a movie I've watched used Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis to evoque the thin veil that separates and unites life and death, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't much, but it's weird that it's happened only twice.
